CHAPTER 14. Unexpected Lessons
*** âI Canât Get You Out Of My Headâ by Glimmer of Blooms ***
Alex sticks by my side and doesnât leave me alone for a second. He deals with work matters at night when Iâm asleep, while he virtually doesnât sleep at all. And no matter how fascinated I am by this ability of his to âfeelâ, itâs too much.
âAlex, stop working at night! If there are issues you need to deal with, then go home and sort them out during the day!â
He lets out a long sigh, clearly unhappy with the way things are, but he refuses to interrupt our holiday and continues to work at night, afraid to let me out of his sight.
And with good reason. The threat called Jean has started staring at me openly, and it is not the look of a friend, or an enemy, or a brother. It is the look of a man, and it grows softer, more affectionate, and more inviting with each passing day. I hadnât seen Fantômasâs original mask for such a long time that I had actually managed to forget about it.
But it came back to me suddenly, and not in the most pleasant of circumstances.
After a few days, Alex finally suggests I go out for an evening stroll on my own, saying he has some urgent and important business to take care of. Extremely important and even more urgent.
I donât want to be a distraction, so I happily wander around on my own for the whole evening. But fate is fate, and, as everyone knows, there is no getting away from it.
I run into Jean unexpectedly: he is leaning with his back against the window of the restaurantâs long corridor, his figure solitary and imposing (in the very best sense of the word). His arms are folded across his chest, and his expression is difficult to read: it is something like regret, mixed with either disappointment or grief. He grabs my hands and holds them for a while, as if gathering his thoughts. I donât know what to think, and I desperately try to figure out a way to shake him off without appearing rude. Jean is nervous and twitchy, and he keeps glancing towards the lobby. Finally, he bites his lip so hard that it draws blood, and my eyes widen in horror â I have never seen him like this before.
Without waiting for him to say anything intelligible, I break the silence.
âItâs really hot today, isnât it? By the way, I tried that salmon dish you were raving about, and you know what? Just before we left, Alex took me to a restaurant in Seattle where the fish was prepared in a way Iâve never seen before, and it was really tasty. You should try it.â
âFirst of all, Lera, remember: the only food worth eating is in Europe and Asia; and secondly...â
He breaks off and, grabbing me roughly, spins me around so that my back is to the lobby, then, staring into my eyes like a lovesick puppy, he exclaims suddenly, âLera! Do you.
